Medicaid Turns 50!

Look at the Long-Term Benefits of Childhood Medicaid • July 30, 2015

Research emphasizes the impactful role that Medicaid plays as a source of health coverage and financial protection for children and families. The benefits of Medicaid last through adulthood and the Center for Children and Families (at Georgetown University) highlights new data and examples of the long-term effects of Medicaid. Better health, lower rates of mortality, better educational and economic outcomes are just a few mentioned along with many ways in which government recoups its investment in the long term.

Waivers for State Innovation

A provision of Ohio’s recently passed state budget, which hasn’t gotten a lot of attention, requires the Superintendent of Insurance (Lt. Governor Mary Taylor) to submit a Waiver for State Innovation application (known as a Section 1332 Waiver) to the federal government to eliminate the employer and individual insurance mandate in the State of Ohio. Specifically Ohio would be seeking to waive the requirements found in Sections 5000A and 4980H of the Internal Revenue Service code. The budget language goes further to say “the application shall provide for the establishment of a system that provides access to affordable health insurance coverage for the residents of this state”.
